On Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October, over 200 Young Planners joined the Royal Town Planning Institute in Cambridge for the 2024 Young Planners Conference which was organised by the RTPI East of England Young Planners Committee, which included Katie Fowler.
We were thrilled to have both Tim Murphy and Peter Dawson speaking at the event. Tim was one of four panellists that opened up the conference with the first plenary session; “Growth and the Historic Environment”. The session was chaired by Katie where the panellists answered three questions on how growth can occur sympathetically with the historic environment.
Also on the Friday, Katie was joined in a breakout session by the Essex Quality Review Panel Vice-Chair, Maggie Baddeley and Place Services alumni, Chris King where they discussed who is responsible for ensuring the delivery of placemaking, how the private sector and public sector can work together to deliver on this and the role that Design Review Panels play in making design objective as opposed to subjective.
On the Saturday, Pete joined the conference to host a breakout session on “Landscape-led Development”. Pete discussed the value of design guides, particularly in relation to the Essex Design Guide and how by reviewing matters such as street types, parking typologies and separation distances to increase the density of sites, we can improve their quality, landscaping and BNG.
