The National Trust commissioned Place Services historic environment specialists to complete an historic landscape survey of its Hatfield Forest estate, enhancing the results of an earlier measured survey by English Heritage.
Each of the features recorded in the English Heritage survey was identified, described and assessed for inclusion on the National Trust's Historic Environment Record. A period by period summary was researched and written, and a statement of significance was prepared.
The final report presented recommendations for the integrated conservation management and interpretation of the property, and concluded that a comparative analysis should be undertaken to assess whether the Forest warrants designation as a World Heritage Site.
